Quantity Surveyor

A quantity surveyor will coach and mentor, train and assist participants in the Enterprise Development Centre on how to cost and price, as well as manage all costs relating to their building and civil engineering projects from start to finish.

The quantity surveyor should place emphasis on training and assisting the participants to cost their projects accurately, minimise the costs of their projects and enhance value for money, while still achieving the required standards and quality.

The scope of the Quantity Surveyor’s activities will include training and assisting participants with the following:

  • Preparing tender and contract documents, including bills of quantities;
  • Preparing and analysing costings for tenders;
  • Assessing cost effects when changes occur and agree on variation with clients;
  • Undertaking costs analysis for repair and maintenance project work;
  • Performing risk and value management and cost control;
  • Compiling cash flow data to enable participants to plan their resources adequately to meet contract commitments;
  • Identifying, analysing and developing responses to commercial risks;
  • Providing advice on the use and remuneration of subcontractors;
  • Providing advice on contractual claims;
  • Analysing outcomes and writing detailed progress reports;
  • Ensuring all work at every stage of a project is completed on time, within budget and to the correct standard and quality;
  • Valuing completed work and assisting in compiling claims;
  • Report writing.

Ideal candidates will meet the following qualifications:

  • Degree / diploma in quantity surveying / civil engineering
  • Five years of relevant work experience
  • Experience of working with SMEs will be a major advantage
  • Team player with good problem solving and analytical skills, with an ability to execute the tasks timely and effectively
  • Sound analytical, organizational, project management and negotiation skills and the ability to conduct training and workshops/seminars
  • Advanced computer skills, including word processing, spread sheet, power point, data management, and other packages
  • Strong written and interpersonal communication skills in English with an ability to interact with a very broad spectrum of stakeholders
  • Ability to work under pressure, travel long distances and work long hours as and when required
